Speaking in Tongues

Should I SPEAK IN TONGUES?

One of the most frequently asked questions in Christianity especially by new converts and the young generation of Christians is:

“Why should I speak in tongues?”

Questioning the essence and importance of speaking in tongues is well found because of abuse and how it has been faked over time.

To think that there is a theological school of thought called “Cessationism” which posits that the spiritual gifts ended with the Apostles, gives it more reason why this question should be asked.

To answer this question, we have to begin with the scriptures.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:7-10 (NKJV)

It is established here that we should speak in different kinds of tongues. I think it is only proper that we evaluate the criticisms that have been raised against speaking in tongues and the biblical response to them.

1. No one can speak in tongues now, and if you do, it’s of the devil.

While this may sound very extreme, this is the perspective that some Christians in the body of Christ have. We talked about Cessationists earlier; in actual terms, this is how they sound and is their belief.

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

Mark 16:17-18 (NKJV)

If I believe I can cast out devils, then why am I not having the second part?

Can anything be used and abused? The answer is Yes! But it is important to note that the abuse of something does not stop the use. Simply because people abuse drugs doesn’t mean drugs should stop being used.

Every Kingdom has its language. There is no Kingdom you come to that does not have a language.

Since every tribe and every Kingdom has its language and the Kingdom of God is in you. It means the kingdom of God has its language, and the language of the kingdom of God is speaking in tongues. It’s tongues. It’s a new one.

 2. Some people can speak in tongues, but it’s not for everyone.

This is another lopsided school of thought about speaking in tongues.

Saying that some special select people can speak in tongues is like coming to your tribe and saying, that only some selected people can speak our language; a proposition that doesn’t hold water.

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.

29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Joel 2:28-29 (NKJV)

This passage of scripture reveals clearly that, no one is exempted from speaking in tongues. Sometimes we do this exemption to justify certain cases where people cannot speak in tongues; believing that there are only some select people that God chooses.

The truth is, that speaking in tongues is for all believers. Everybody can and should speak in tongues.

3. Everybody can speak in tongues, but there are better things to pursue.

Somebody said one time, he said, that if signs and wonders are not following you, maybe you are following the wrong Jesus, or you are very far from Him.

1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

1 Corinthians 14:1

Paul said, pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may the spiritual gift of which of them is speaking in tongues. So why should I have one and lack the other? Why should I pursue love and neglect speaking in tongues? If I take Jesus, I take everything. I embrace the His Spirit; I embrace the gift that the Spirit is supposed to manifest. So pursue love but don’t neglect other things. Pursue spiritual gifts, pursue it. You are a spirit being. You are a spirit. Understand that clearly, and you should have the language of the Spirit.

BENEFITS OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES

1. It is a devotional prayer to God.

In your own understanding, you don’t even know your native language; because there’s no native language; language is language.  There’s no vernacular, Vernacular is a derogatory word. No language is higher than any other language.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:2

Speaking in tongues is first a prayer to God. It is meant to connect you to God without the interference of your environment. It is understood by God only and can be revealed when he chooses to show the meaning to somebody else in the body of faith. It connects your mind, your spirit, and soul to God in that moment.

2. Generating secrets of the Kingdom into your spirit.

Generating secrets of the kingdom into your spirit is why you pray in tongues. Life is mysterious, you need to be a mysterious person and the problem we have can never be solved the way it was created or at the same level of knowledge it was created.

The world has a problem. Let me also tell you, that heaven has solutions, and that settles it. There is no problem so big in any nation that God has no solution to. The problem is that you think the way he should answer it is your way. No, it’s not your way, It’s His way. And as you pray more in tongues, you begin to see what God is doing.

In 1 Corinthians 14:2, he said in the spirit, he speaks mysteries. In Greek “mysteries” is called musterion. What is mystery?  Secrets of the kingdom are not revealed to ordinary mortals. In other words, as you are speaking in tongues, the secret of the kingdom is revealed to you, and not revealed to ordinary mortals, those that call themselves just human beings, but is revealed to you who is a spirit.

Throughout the scriptures, you’d find that anytime Jesus was faced with a strange situation, he always knew what to do.

Your child is giving you problems. There’s no need to complain about the child. All you need to do is to start praying devotionally to God and start speaking in mysteries. God will give you what to do to that child. As little as I remember one time I would wear a shoe and my last toe would hurt me. In pain, I would tell myself, what’s all this? As I was praying one day, the Lord said, why don’t you cream your feet with shea butter? Shockingly I haven’t had that pain ever since.

A lawyer was going to face a SAN in court and he was not up to a SAN. He got to his office that day and began to pray in tongues. On his shelf, a book was highlighted to him, he picked up the book, opened to a page, read some of that page, got to the court, and won the case.

You cannot afford to be part of the people who come to the marketplace without power. Jesus did not tell us, we don’t need power. Instead, He said, “You shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you.” The more you generate this power, the more secrets are revealed to you.

Do you want to know how to work with your wife? There are general rules in marriage and there are specific ones for you. Yes, general rules apply in marriage, but the one that God has for you is specific because your marriage is unique. That’s how you can have a supernatural marriage. Many of you have all the principles in marriage, all the principles on how to make money.

At the heart of the matter, money and wealth are fundamentally spiritual. This is because true, legitimate wealth is portable – it can be transposed from one place to another. When an individual is uprooted from their native environment, where their physical possessions and material assets are located, and is taken elsewhere, they can recreate and reproduce their wealth in the new setting.

As the biblical passage states, “it is God who gives you the power to get wealth”

(Deuteronomy 8:18).

Wealth, in this view, is not simply the product of human toil and labor but is empowered by a divine, spiritual force. This suggests that the stewardship and utilization of money and resources have a sacred dimension, as it is derived from a supernatural wellspring.

3. Speaking in tongues is edifying yourself.

But you beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.

Jude 1:20.

One of the ways to pray in the Holy Spirit is by praying in tongues. What is edifying? You are building an edifice. When you are praying in tongues, you are building an edifice in your spirit man, that is about to warehouse mysteries of the kingdom or secrets of the kingdom that has not been revealed to mere mortals.

The problem is that as you pray if there is no edifice when the answer is coming, you can’t receive it. That’s why you come to church prayed up. Because there are so many things coming out from here, you cannot receive it If you’re not saying; Lord, I’ve come to receive from you today; You don’t come to church carelessly in worship. No, you come prepared to receive because now there’s a manifested presence of God here.

All of us, where two or three are gathered in my name, that’s where He is. And there’s so much light.  That is why some people come to church sad and they go back very happy. Why? There is something that has touched them. So as you are praying in tongues you are building a skyscraper to warehouse some form of revelation that nobody can give you.

Thank You

In this post, we’ve taken a close look at the reason and practice of speaking in tongues, as well as the biblical characteristics of the gift of tongues. This topic is a source of significant debate and division within the broader Christian tradition. However, our examination here has only scratched the surface of this complex and multi-faceted issue. There is still much more that can be unpacked and explored when it comes to the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues. We will release the second part of this in our next blog.

Stay tuned.

Shalom.
